WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma is a wound that injures a person emotionally. It can be chronic – happening over time, or acute – a one time occurrence. The younger it happens, the more impact it tends to have. Trauma changes the brain.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAUMA:

  • Developmental
  • Shock
  • Relational
  • Sustained Community-Based Traumatic Stress
  • Intergenerational/Historic
  • Secondary
  • Vicarious

VICARIOUS TRAUMA:

Vicarious trauma is a shift in the emotional well-being of someone who cares for individuals who have experienced trauma.

It can lead to feelings of hopelessness, exhaustion, depression.

It can have physical effects as the caregiver carries the weight of the trauma.
